A Message from Jullianna Charlton

Founder and CEO

I grew up in rural British Columbia, living in a place of true natural beauty, surrounded by a community of creative people, artists and inspiring energy. My life was simple then, and nature was my grounding element. My mother Naomi intentionally raised me this way, without the influences of mainstream society, as she wanted to ensure my life was free from constraints and inhibitions so I could learn who I truly was.

But it was only after my mother passed away that I realized just how much care she had taken to instill in me a deeply rooted connection to nature and to my own innate creativity. Some months after her death, I discovered she had left me a treasure trove of original drawings, paintings and sketches.

As I began to pull piece after piece of art from the drawers in her home, I felt an overwhelming connection to my mother and to my childhood as I relived memories of where I’d come from. Faces and names came flooding back, and I found myself remembering my origins. In the images Naomi had created, I saw my daughter, my best friends and all women seeking to celebrate their individuality. That day changed the direction of my life, as my mother’s art sparked an idea that I felt compelled to make a reality.

Every collection I create embodies a love of life, learning and growing through kindness and awareness. All nourishing to our minds, bodies and souls, while keeping us grounded in the importance of living life with purpose and grace. That is the spirit of NoMiNoU.

I know that Naomi is looking down at this incredible journey with a wide smile and a knowing wink. She absolutely knew that when she left those pieces in the furniture that I would find a way to express her love of nature and life with the rest of the world. I am so blessed to have been raised by a strong, incredible woman and am grateful that I have been able to surround myself with women who remind me of her strength.

To become the person you strive to be, you must first accept the true person you are and from where you originate.

About NoMiNoU

NoMiNoU started as a personal journey of self-awareness, but it has evolved into a collaborative endeavour that celebrates every woman’s individuality and the acceptance of her origins.

The brand aims to uplift women in their everyday lives and make them feel beautiful in their own essence.

NoMiNoU is a fusion of the name of Designer, Founder and CEO Jullianna Charlton's mother, Naomi, and the phrase “No Me, No You”. The artistic blending of Naomi’s drawings with powerful quotes from influential females makes each range of tribal print leggings, scarves and tops truly unique. Each item is designed to make women stand proud in their individualism.

NoMiNoU embodies a love of ethnicity, learning and growth through embracing one’s origin and from the teachings from those around us; all nourishing to our spirit, minds and bodies thus keeping us grounded in the importance of living life with purpose and grace.

NoMiNoU creates a line of “wearable art”-that is collectable, functional and fashionable whilst honouring cultural  diversity and respecting our environment.

We offer distinct designs characterized by unique patterns which are adapted from original artwork created by the late mother of company founder, Julianna Charlton, or from commissioned collaborations with Indigenous, Canadian & international artists.

NoMiNoU ….we are all one

Sustainability Story

Made in Canada

All of our clothing is designed, printed and manufactured entirely in Canada, reducing carbon emissions that result from sourcing and shipping products from overseas.

Instead of screen-printing our patterns, we use a sublimation technique that reduces the amount of ink needed to print our designs onto the fabric, resulting in less impact on the environment.

No·Mi·No·U takes great care to use environmentally-friendly fabric and materials whenever possible. Each pair of No·Mi·No·U pants, removes approximately 7 plastic water bottles from the environment.

How We Source Our Materials

All leggings, capris and shorts are made from a blend of 12%
spandex and 88% recycled polyester, which is made from recycled
PET (a 100% post-consumer recycled raw material that is derived from
recycled post-water bottles). This is an eco-friendly fabric that adheres to the Global Recycled Standard (GRS). All leggings, capris and shorts are made from yarns that have achieved Gold Level Certification by GRS.

No·Mi·No·U tanks and pullovers are also made using eco-friendly
materials. These products are made from fabric comprised of 67%
rayon from bamboo, 29% cotton and 4% spandex.

What is the Global Recycled Standard?

Global Recycled Standard (GRS) provides verified support for the amount of recycled content in a yarn. It also provides a track-and-trace certification system that helps to ensure that the claim “a fabric is made from recycled polyester” can be officially verified.

The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) addresses input material verification, chain of custody, environmental principles, social requirements, and labeling for textile products made from recycled materials. It aims to be a full-product standard for recycled material content that balances rigor and practicality for the industry and end consumers.

GRS requires that certified companies keep comprehensive records of their use of chemicals, energy, water consumption, and waste water treatment including the disposal of sludge. All prohibited chemicals listed in GOTS are also prohibited in the GRS. Beyond chemical and environmental considerations, GRS also includes extensive provisions related to workers rights.

Recycled Polyester — How It’s Made

Recycled polyester (PET) is 100% post-consumer recycled raw material. Made from recycled water bottles.

  1. Plastic PET Containers are sorted and picked up from community recycling centres. They are stripped of their labels and caps, washed, crushed, and chopped into flakes.
  2. The flakes are then made into a chip form creating PET chips.
  3. The chips are then made into filament yarn.
  4. The recycled yarn is utilized to create fabric.

Through No·Mi·No·U’s commitment to the environment, the company hopes to make a small, positive impact on our beloved Mother Earth.
